News of the Week ABM Congratulates iPod Winner All it took was a visit to the American Business Media Web site and a couple of clicks for Angela Eisenbarth, senior marketing manager at Branch-Smith Publishing, to become the proud recipient of a brand-new video iPod, courtesy of ABM. This summer, ABM began the process of updating its database information to ensure that member companies continue to receive the valuable benefits that come with Association membership. Members were asked to submit their most current company information, and by doing so, were entered into a raffle to win a video iPod. Over 70 responses were submitted by the August 13th deadline, but we could only award one lucky member. Congratulations, Angela! ABM would like to thank everyone who participated by sending in their information and allowing us to keep providing you with our top-line member benefits. If you are still interested in updating your company profile (sorry, no iPod this time), please contact Debbie Humphreys. News on Print Year-to-Date Numbers Show Business Media Ad Revenue Dips 1.9% While some categories showed growth, the Business Information Network (BIN) report through May showed a slight decline in ad pages and revenue compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date numbers revealed a 3.3% decline in ad pages and ad revenue dipped 1.9% for the year-to-date. Despite the decline in May pages, certain categories posted gains in print revenue. Architecture, Design & Lighting led the positive categories with a healthy 14.4% jump. “While the May numbers are not what we hoped they would be, the year-to-date numbers continue to suggest that magazine revenues remain steady,” said Gordon T. Hughes II, president and CEO of American Business Media. “It’s important to remember there is strong growth in face-to-face events, and revenue from digital products and custom media continues to climb at impressive rates. Overall, our industry continues to be robust.” The data, by category, is available at ABM’s Web site or by clicking here.

Corporate Charity Efforts Library Journal Rebuilds Communities, Encourages Corporate Charity At the 10th annual William D. Littleford Awards on August 14, American Business Media was pleased to celebrate outstanding dedication to corporate community service. Established to recognize active programs aimed at alleviating critical social problems, the awards promoted increased coverage and recognition of corporate community service success stories. First runner up Library Journal, nominated by Reed Business Information, is the epitome of one of those success stories. The publication received a $1,000 donation for its launch of a “Library Makeover” program, designed to showcase the latest in library design, furnishings and technology, as well as to benefit individual libraries. When the Library Journal team launched the project in 2005 at the Queens Borough Public Library in New York, they had no idea that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita would so quickly affect their efforts. But when the storms hit, there was no question as to where the next “makeover” would take place. The Alvar Street Branch restoration in New Orleans was complicated not only by the destruction of furnishings but also by the loss of all books, computers and other materials that make a library viable. Serving as a conduit for vendors, publishers, distributors and others in the library community to channel their commitment to libraries and the role they play in sustaining and rebuilding communities, Library Journal captures the true essence of Littleford’s tireless effort to bring community service to the forefront and raise awareness of public need. The 2007 Littleford Awards were sponsored by The Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc.
