Forrester Study Breaks In Print, In-Person and Online

Two weeks after it was first released, interest in one of the most comprehensive studies of business media continues to grow. This exclusive critical research study simultaneously examined more than 800 marketers who operate in the business media space and 800 end-users to provide an incredibly accurate and insightful assessment of the current state and value of b-to-b media.

In less than one week, more than 1,600 people have visited the new Forrester Research study online. On October 9, more than 160 ABM member company reps registered for a members-only webinar for the initial presentation of the study conclusions.

Approximately 90 marketers and advertisers were on hand at the University Club of New York last Tuesday morning to hear the findings of the 2007 Forrester study presented live. Now, ABM is giving you access to two different versions of the webcasts, available online: one for members only and one for the marketing and advertising communities. Don’t delay … act now and access this important industry research.

Just visit www.americanbusinessmedia.com to access the study presentation, or contact Richard Bertin at  r.bertin@abmmail.com for more information.

ABM/MPA 2007 Compensation Survey Report

The American Business Media/Magazine Publishers of America 2007 Compensation Survey Report is conducted in conjunction with Towers Perrin's CDB Media Industry Database. The report features data on base salary, actual and target bonuses, long-term incentives (stock options, restricted stock, cash plans) and employment status (exempt, nonexempt, contract), as well as corporate, group and business unit positions at newspapers, book and information publishers, television and radio stations and program producers/networks. A total of 62 MPA and/or ABM members participated in this year's survey, representing over 400 magazine titles and generating a sample size that is approximately 150% as large as in the 2005 survey. As expected, the greatest proportion of the increase was in the business-to-business category, the result of ABM's sponsorship. Another exciting new development is the addition of the event/exhibit job family, which debuted with 28 participants.

ABM’s Cocktails & Connections Returns to New York!

Okay, be honest, when’s the last time you put down your Blackberry and went to an event to have a meaningful face-to-face conversation? If you have to pause and check your calendar, consider this:

Tomorrow night at Mantra 986 in New York City, ABM’s Cocktails & Connections event is the perfect opportunity for you to go old school and just schmooze! Webster’s defines schmooze as: 1. noun. An informal conversation; 2. verb. To talk idly or casually in a friendly way. Believe it or not, you can schmooze without being in front of a computer screen or having an avatar that teleports! Sound retro?

Tomorrow evening, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, come out and rub shoulders with icons like Jim Whelan, senior account executive for the Ad Age Group. Not only does he grasp the importance of networking, he’s proof positive that making the effort to recognize your advertisers helps publishers drive ad sales that translate to revenue.

ABM’s Cocktails & Connections is the perfect opportunity to gather with (live) industry peers in an informal setting to mingle, network and talk shop over drinks and appetizers; and you don’t have to log in or deal with pop-ups.

Interested? Just click here to join the party! Contact Michele Langer for more information.

Cocktails & Connections is sponsored by Audit Bureau of Circulations.

House Passes Reporter's Shield Bill By Overwhelming Margin, Focus Turns to the Senate

As many ABM members know, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2102, The Free Flow of Information Act, by a margin of 398 to 21 last Tuesday. H.R. 2102 would provide reporters protection against being compelled to disclose their sources of information with certain specific exceptions to protect national security and thwart other criminal activities.

ABM strongly supports a federal shield law, and despite the huge margin in the final vote, passage was by no means a certainty. Opponents of the bill had introduced an amendment which would have almost certainly rendered the legislation meaningless. Later, a motion was offered to recommit the legislation, which would have returned the bill to the Committee for further consideration and prevented the floor vote. Bill sponsors skillfully deflected both attempts to derail the legislation by accepting a slightly strengthened national security provision to the language that permits judges to order exceptions to the privilege.

The large margin of support for the bill in the House will be very helpful as attention now turns to the Senate, where prospects for floor action are more uncertain. The Department of Justice remains adamantly opposed to the bill due to national security concerns, and "holds" by a number of senators preventing a floor vote are certain to occur. The overwhelming support in the House, however, will provide a strong argument for overcoming the anticipated opposition.

The shield law coalition will meet this Wednesday, October 24, to discuss the status of the bill and strategy to move it forward in the Senate. We will keep you posted on the progress of this important legislation. Thanks to all ABM members who responded to the calls to contact their Members of Congress in support of the House bill. Clearly, the combined voices of the journalism community were heard loud and clear. Your support in the forthcoming Senate battle will be critical for seeing a shield bill enacted into law.

Stay tuned to E-news for the latest updates and information on what YOU can do to support the passing of the shield law bill in the Senate.

National FFA Convention Aims to Attract Young Talent To Business Media

In an effort to promote business media to young students and connect with American Business Media’s strategic plan, ABM’s senior vice president of business media services, John Holden, and several members of ABM’s Agri Council are heading west this week to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.

Formerly the Future Farmers of America, the group changed its name to the National FFA Organization in 1988 to reflect the growing career opportunities in agricultural education. With over 7,000 chapters in existence today, the FFA supports state and local agricultural education programs and prepares students for careers in the food, fiber and natural resources industries.

During the four-day conference, titled “Blue Jackets, Bright Futures,” the ABM Agri Council is sponsoring the annual Executive Breakfast for leaders in the ag media industry, on Thursday, October 25. This year’s guest speaker is John Becherer, CEO of the United Soybean Board, who will present his vision on the future of the soybean industry.

In addition, Holden will once again serve as a judge for the Supervised Agricultural Experience Awards (Proficiency Awards) at the Convention. The awards honor students in the FFA Organization who have demonstrated outstanding entrepreneurship in an agricultural production or business enterprise.

Their speeches were so moving, we decided to feature them during this week’s broadcast of the ABM Video Network.
