NEAL AWARDS JUDGING CONCLUDES Screening and judging of the 1,186 entries to the 51st Annual Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Awards have concluded. Finalists will be announced in next week's E-News.
The 2005 Neal Board of Judges, led by distinguished business journalist Marshall Loeb, deliberated for almost three hours this past weekend on which entry should be honored with the Grand Neal Award. "The debates were rather heated," said New York Times financial investigative reporter Diana Henriques, a longtime Neal Awards judge. "The long discussion was necessary, because there were some very strong contenders for the top award."

Judges concurred that this year's entries showed b-to-b journalism at its best, with lots of "nuts-and-bolts" information to help industry professionals do their jobs better. Winners of the 2005 Neal Awards will be honored at a luncheon on March 16th at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. Register here.
There's still time for editors to submit entries for the 2nd Annual Timothy White Award for editorial courage and integrity. The recipient of this award will also be honored during the Neal ceremony. Deadline for entries is February 1. See rules and guidelines here.
NEED A SUMMER INTERN? Employ some of today's best and brightest students, while supporting the future of b-to-b media! The Business Press Educational Foundation (BPEF) is now accepting requests from ABM member companies to secure interns for the 2005 summer season. With a record number of student applications expected, this year's talent pool promises to be one of the deepest in the program's 21-year history.
The BPEF internship program gives college students from the nation's top journalism and communications schools a chance to work in b-to-b editorial, marketing or production departments. Last year, 42 students earned paid internships at 13 ABM member companies.
"The quality of students in the BPEF summer internship program is impressive," said Sean Essex, director of marketing for the Tracom Group at Reed Business Information. "We ended up hiring our BPEF intern last year as a full-time employee."
