E-News : March 26, 2007 News of the Week ABM mourns distinguished industry leader, Bob Krakoff American Business Media and the entire business media industry mourn the loss of Nielsen Business Media chairman and CEO Robert Krakoff, who passed suddenly on Friday March 23, 2007 of an apparent heart attack. The 71-year old industry legend leaves behind a great void. As the 2003 chair of American Business Media, he ushered in new ideas and concepts leading to today’s digital transformation. “Ever the visionary, Bob always stood behind the association and was instrumental in bringing ABM’s mission and strategic plan to fruition,” stated Gordon T. Hughes II, American Business Media president and CEO. “I keep three ideas from Bob close to my heart and they have served me well over the years: ‘Never spend more than you make,’ ‘if people aren’t buying what you’re selling, you’re selling it wrong,’ and ‘always write as if the man from Mars is reading it.’ Bob will be sorely missed from our association, our industry and as a dear friend.” Krakoff was instrumental in helping to create landmark resources and outlets for its members, including instituting the Business Information Network (BIN) to track business media print ad spending and pages, and the Creative Excellence in Advertising (CEBA) Awards honoring outstanding business media advertising. He was also part of a Main Street Coalition delegation that participated in the postal reform struggle over the years. Prior to joining Nielsen (formerly VNU) in 2006, Krakoff served two years as chairman & chief executive officer of Blantyre Partners, Inc, a strategic management and investment company for the media industry. From 1996 to 2004, he was chairman and chief executive officer of Advanstar, Inc., which operates business communications activities through its subsidiary, Advanstar Communications Inc. (Advanstar, Inc. is owned by DLJ Merchant Banking Partners, III, L.P., which in turn is owned by Credit Suisse First Boston.) Prior to joining Advanstar, Krakoff spent 23 years at Reed Elsevier plc, a leading international publisher and information provider. During his career at Reed, he held the position of chief executive of Reed Exhibition Companies and Reed Reference Publishing, chairman and CEO of Cahners Publishing Company, director of Reed Elsevier plc and vice chairman of Reed Elsevier Inc. He also held executive positions in the areas of finance, marketing and planning at Ford Motor Company, Trans World Airlines, The Singer Corporation, and RCA. Krakoff was the 2002 recipient of ABM's McAllister Top Management Fellowship award for career leadership in business media. He was also a Trustee of the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston. He graduated magna cum laude from Pennsylvania State University and received an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business. He was a member of Belmont CC, Palm Beach CC, the Lotos Club, the Harvard Club of Boston & New York, the University Club of Boston and the Core Club. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. Krakoff is survived by his wife, Sandra, two sons, Roger and Reed, and a daughter Hope.
