Marketing & Media Buying Trade Show Revenue Continues to Increase in 1st Quarter Recent findings from CEIR report that trade show revenues continue to flourish in the first quarter of 2007. Year to date revenue rose 5.3% to $2.94 billion when compared to the same time period in 2006. In addition to this promising growth figure, attendance grew 3.1%. This growth trend is expected to continue through 2007. For more information on trade show revenues, please visit http://www.ceir.org. The Business Information Network (BIN) report through March shows magazine print revenues stable in the first quarter. Ad pages have decreased slightly by 2.91%, with ad revenue following suit with a 1.16% decrease. Although magazine ad pages and revenues remain essentially flat, there are strong category performers for print. They include the Architecture, Design, Lighting category, with a year-to-date increase in ad revenue of 10.68%; Professional Services category which followed with a 9.39% increase; and the Resources, Environment and Utilities with an 8.25% increase. “As the numbers come in wrapping up the first quarter, we must continue to look at the entire scope of our business, in print, in person and online.” said Gordon T. Hughes II, president and CEO of American Business Media. “The growth trend in tradeshows and other platforms, such as digital and custom media, is not replacing print, it is merely complimenting it and reflecting this dynamic shift.” In January 2005, American Business Media augmented its reporting model for magazine advertising sales in industry markets, as relayed through BIN, by examining 21 markets comprised of all business-to-business books tracked by IMS/The Auditor, and PERQ/HCI for healthcare figures. The data, by category, is available on ABM’s Web site by clicking here.

Committee Corner Got Video? IT Committee Talks Strategy, Solutions Whether it’s broadband, cable, iPods, cell phones or PDAs, using technology to make content available on video is one of the hottest emerging trends for business information companies seeking new revenue streams and more effective ways to connect with audiences. But some organizations wrestle with how to incorporate video into an overall business strategy. Last Wednesday, members of ABM’s newly-formed IT Committee listened to representatives from three different companies share their expertise in an area committee chair Mo Effron, vice president, IT, IDG International Publishing Services, feels is critical for the IT sector.
“When it comes to the growing importance of video content delivery by business media publishers, IT professionals must concern themselves not only with the “how” but with the “why” as well.” Effron observes. One of the very first initiatives the members of the IT Committee agreed on at their initial February meeting was a need to examine how the evolving role of the IT professional in the business media space might be impacted by the growing use of video to deliver content.
Experts attending the committee meeting included Rick Sannicandro of Medialink, Steve Hearn and Andrea Mitchell of podcastGO.com, and Doug Lieu of Dragonfly, who unanimously suggested that understanding clearly what a company wants and expects from the delivery of content on video will help a strategy to materialize.
In addition, with the availability of Web metrics, online video offers an excellent opportunity for business information providers to tailor content to a targeted audience. But Effron emphasizes that it starts with strategy: “Participating in the formulation of a video strategy and leveraging their knowledge of what's possible and what others are doing allows IT professionals to help their organizations succeed with this new medium.”
