Jan. 9, 2012 – The 2011 American Business Media / Magazine Publishers of America Compensation Survey Report has been issued by Towers Watson, a global consulting firm with special expertise in human resources. Including data from about 50 companies and 7,400 employees in 175 job titles, the survey reveals the latest compensation trends for media professionals, including actual dollar values for average and mean compensation for every job title – but only when data from at least five employees per title were obtained. The results also include data on deviation from the mean, with dollar values for the 10th, 25th, 75th and 90th percentiles.

For each job title, the survey offers base salary, bonus, long-term incentive and total direct compensation. Every line of data also reveals how many companies and how many employees were included in generating that line. Job titles are grouped into executive, magazine, event and online groupings.

Analysis of the data reveals several interesting trends. As an example, salaries for consumer media companies were shown to be consistently higher than those for business-to-business companies. For editorial salaries, b-to-b titles are, on average, about half of consumer titles. The graph below, showing average compensation in thousands of dollars, illustrates this trend.

American Business Media is the only association focused on the integrated b-to-b media model, including print publications, events, digital media and business information. ABM’s 200-plus member companies reach an audience of more than 100 million professionals and represent nearly 4,000 print and online titles and over 1,000 trade shows, with more than $20 billion in annual revenues.

MPA – The Association of Magazine Media is the industry association for multi-platform magazine companies.  Established in 1919, MPA represents 175 domestic magazine media companies with more than 900 titles, approximately 30 international companies and more than 100 associate members.

According to Towers Watson client relations specialist Tina Gay, ABM members gain other benefits from contributing data to the project.  "Participation in the ABM/MPA Compensation Survey provides access to Towers Watson's broader CDB Media and General Industry Executive Compensation Surveys, allowing ABM participants to purchase additional CDB reports," she says. "Participants can also contact Towers Watson for any custom analysis needs."
