IEEE SPECTRUM Editor earns Grand Neal Award

Executive editor Glenn Zorpette takes home top prize for his subject-related series of articles

NEW YORK, March 22, 2007—Glenn Zorpette (pictured right), executive editor of IEEE SPECTRUM, the flagship publication of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), received the coveted Grand Neal Award at the 53rd Annual Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Awards, held today at The Waldorf=Astoria. His subject-related series of articles, “Re-engineering Iraq,” gave readers new insights about engineering projects that are among the largest and most politically charged and led to an op-ed article for The New York Times and a guest appearance on the syndicated NPR program “Science Talk of the Nation.”

Zorpette, who was also recognized during the Luncheon Ceremony as the 13th recipient of the McAllister Editorial Fellowship, accepted the Grand Neal Award from the incoming chair of the Neal Judging Board, Bob Dowling, former editor-in-chief/publisher of The Hollywood Reporter and a past recipient of the ABM Crain Award. IEEE SPECTRUM earned the Grand Neal from a pool of over 1100 entries.

ALM’s The American Lawyer article “Recipe for Disaster,” IDG’s CSO article “The How-To Issue,” and Nielsen Business Media’s Photo District News September 2006 Issue were recognized as finalists for the Grand Neal Award during an awards luncheon hosted by Diana Henriques, financial investigative reporter at The New York Times and Arnie Weissmann, editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly. The Neal Board of Judges—who selected one Neal Award winner in each category and ultimately chose the Grand Neal winner—was chaired this year by distinguished journalist Marshall Loeb, MarketWatch from Dow Jones.
