About the speakers:

Heather Cox, Vice President, PR, Events & Product Development, FierceMarkets

Heather Cox Martin brings more than ten years of strategic communications and event planning experience to FierceMarkets. Since joining Fierce in 2005, she has built a successful and profitable events business from the ground up, while also managing both corporate and publication-specific PR efforts. Most recently, Martin has expanded her role with Fierce and is spearheading the development of new products, including eBooks, video offerings, and other custom publishing vehicles.

Previously, Martin worked in the healthcare practice at Porter Novelli, a global PR and communications firm, where she developed events for a number of high-profile healthcare and pharmaceutical accounts. Prior to that, she spent several years in the consulting industry working with both private and public sector clients planning events and building strategic communications campaigns.

Martins holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Sociology from St. Lawrence University.

John DelMauro, VP & Group Publisher, Banking Group, SourceMedia

John DelMauro has more than 10 years of sales and management experience in the financial B2B media industry. Mr. DelMauro is currently responsible for the management of advertising, circulation and audience development, and conferences and events for SourceMedia’s Banking Group which includes American Banker, U.S. Banker and Bank Technology News. 

Prior to his current position, Mr. DelMauro held various sales positions in the conferences and exposition division of Thomson Media, SourceMedia’s prior owner, and he was the Vice President of Sales at RFID Journal a technology media company.

Mr. DelMauro holds a BS in Psychology from St. John’s University.



John Failla, President, Tesoro Events LLC

John has more than 20 years of management experience in business media, including responsibility for face-to-face events, business publications and eMedia products serving a wide variety of markets. In his current role, John continues to explore, study and evaluate emerging business-to-business media models. Prior to starting Tesoro Events in 2007, John served as group president at VNU (Nielsen) Exhibitions, where he was responsible for tradeshows, publications and online services serving several markets.

Before entering the tradeshow business in 1999, John was president of VNU Business Media’s retail group and vice president of retail media at Bill Communications. In these roles, he developed and spearheaded the successful launch of a series of tradeshows under the “eRetailing” brand. Prior to joining Bill Communications, John spent 15 years at Lebhar-Friedman, where as vice president/publisher of Discount Store News, he developed and successfully launched the DSN Conference Group.

An authority on business media brand development and events, John has been a featured speaker at domestic and international conferences. He has given presentations at American Business Media’s Executive Conferences, the VNU Expositions Executive Management Meeting, the M2 Executive Management Conference and the ABC Convention. John is a member of ABM, the Society of Independent Show Organizers (SISO), the International Association of Exhibitions & Events, the Healthcare Exhibitors Association and ASAE & The Center.

Michelle Finn, VP, Hospitality Design Group, Nielsen Business Media

Michelle Finn is vice president, Hospitality Design (HD) Group part of Nielsen Business Media, a division of the Nielsen Company. In this role, she oversees the HD brand, which encompasses Hospitality Design magazine; HD Expo & Conference (Las Vegas), the preeminent trade show for the hospitality design industry; HD Summit, an invitation-only, executive think-tank; HD Boutique Expo & Conference (South Beach, Miami), a boutique inspired trade show.

Finn was named as 2001 Network of Executive Women (NEWH) in Hospitality “Woman of the Year” for outstanding leadership in and exceptional contributions to the hospitality industry, was the 2003 recipient of Nielsen Business Media, Chairman’s award in recognition of outstanding performance in business development and in 2008 Finn received the NEWH Greater NY Chapter’s Industry Innovator award recognizing her accomplishments as a leader who  raised the bar to advance innovation within the hospitality industry. In recognition of outstanding growth, Hospitality Design Expo and Conference and HDBoutique trade shows, were recently honored by Trade Show Weekly magazine as among the top 50 fastest growing trade shows in the United States.

Finn is a member of the American Hotel Lodging Association (AHLA), Urban Land Institute, The International Society of Hospitality Purchasers and Network of Executive Women in Hospitality. Finn currently serves on the national boards of directors of NEWH and ISHP; AHLA’s women’s council.

Underlying Ms. Finn’s success is her ability to understand the fast-changing hospitality design market and to respond to its needs and demands quickly and nimbly. For example, based on the Asian market’s positive response to HD Asia Exhibition and Conference, which began in 2005, Ms. Finn published an Asia-Middle East edition of Hospitality Design magazine within 18 months with a Hong Kong-based team. Her insight into relationship selling led her to develop Hospitality Design Summit on a fast-track schedule.

For her unmistakable mark on the industry she serves, Ms. Finn was named Woman of the Year 2001 by NEWH Inc., The Hospitality Network, a non-profit executive organization dedicated to scholarship fundraising and industry education. Particularly noted was Ms. Finn’s effort to give back to industry charities, integral to her business pursuits in a range of collaborative efforts with associations and organizations and the causes they support.

Hospitality Design Group Receives Top Nod From Tradeshow Week for Exemplifying Outstanding Growth

Jim Keefe, Principal, Conference Results

Jim Keefe is Principal, Conference Results, LLC ( an event management firm.  Conference Results LLC provides value added Event Management, Consulting, M&A Advisory and Implementation services to organizations with live event and training portfolios, as well as those looking to establish a live event and training portfolio.

Prior to launching Conference Results LLC, February 2009, Keefe was Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Event Division at Summit Business Media (SBM).  At SBM (and its predecessor Highline Media), Keefe developed an integrated conference, trade show and classroom training global portfolio that now includes over 125 live events—conferences, trade shows, “C” level events, web seminars--and classroom training sessions annually. Several events in this portfolio were acquired and needed to be rebuilt, with new events also being launched as part of this growth.  . The Event Division is a self contained team complete with its own editorial/program, marketing, sales, operations, finance, customer service and registration functionality and capability. The scale of this centralized operation continues to provide numerous benefits.  

Concurrent with developing the Summit live event portfolio, he also led the SBM Reference Division (01/04-03/08), a Division comprised of 200 print and electronic subscription productivity tools and reference products for Insurance professionals. During this period, SBM invested heavily to migrate the reference business from print based to an interactive online format.  The results met expectations with subscription and retention rates increasing.  Through increased marketing and training, customer utilization of key products also increased.   

As SVP and Managing Director at SBM, Keefe was also a member of the Executive Committee, the team that charts company strategy and growth.

Prior to joining Highline, Jim began and led the development of live event business at Thomson Media (now SourceMedia) from 1997-2003. Starting with one event in 1997, Jim and his team launched what ultimately became the American Banker/Thomson Media portfolio of over 50 events annually.  These industry leading events spanned multiple event categories--conferences, tradeshows, award events, CEO/CFO level invitation-only roundtables and web seminars.  This team led the company in new product development, as well an exceptional revenue and profit growth during his tenure.   

Jim has a BA in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY and resides in Cincinnati, Ohio. 

Kirk Laughlin, Principal, NextCoast Media

Next Coast Media founder and consulting principal Kirk Laughlin is an award-winning media executive and former Managing Director/VP of Events at Ziff Davis Enterprise. Laughlin serves business media leaders in the strategic positioning and optimization of face-to-face and virtual event products. During his 20-year media career, Laughlin has been engaged as a strategic consultant supporting custom media, events and marketing solutions for over 50 companies in the Fortune 1000. He was a key member of the launch team that created the Custom Solutions division at Ziff Davis Media. He earlier held senior editorial positions at Advanstar, Cygnus Business Media and Primedia. During his career, Laughlin has presented at over 250 face-to-face and digital events, primarily on the subjects of information and communication technology and business leadership. Laughlin has also worked as a journalist in Japan and directed event and custom media projects in such diverse geographies as Spain, France, UK, Japan, India, Thailand and China. He is based in southern Connecticut.

Mark Murphy, President & CEO, Performance Media Group

Mark Murphy, founder, president and CEO of Performance Media Group, LLC, has more than 18 years of experience in the travel media industry helping companies to grow their business at record levels. In 2002 Murphy launched his own unique business that today reaches more than 75,000 leisure travel agents. Performance Media Group was just ranked 646th on the Inc. 5000 and was named the 10th fastest growing media company in the United States.

Murphy has spent the past seven years as founder, president and CEO of Performance Media Group focusing on challenging the status quo in the travel media business. To that end he was recently named by EXPO magazine as a “Change Agent” in the industry for his work in developing the first virtual trade shows for travel agents. His understanding of both the travel industry and media space, combined with his desire to continuously offer unique and customer-driven solutions, has positioned him as a pioneer in the business.

Joy Puzzo, Corporate Audience Development Director, Advanstar Communications

Joy Puzzo has been the Corporate Audience Development Director at Advanstar Communications since July 2005. She manages a department of 22 employees, is responsible for 46 print publications and 41 digital editions in both B2B and B2C markets in conjunction with web portal & show registration.  She is currently the Chair of the ABC; Business Publications Industry Committee.  Prior to the acquisition of the Medical Economics magazine group by Advanstar she spent over 10 years working in circulation on Thomson Healthcare publications.  She also worked for 3 years at Prentice Hall/Simon & Schuster in the marketing department book division.  Joy has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Economics from East Stroudsburg University.

Peter Tatara, Director of Industry Development, Reed Exhibitions

Peter Tatara serves as Director of Industry Development for all pop culture events -- most notably the New York Comic Con and New York Anime Festival -- run by trade show organizer Reed Exhibitions.  Tatara's responsibilities span special guests, partnerships, programming, publicity, marketing, web design, and video production.  Prior to coming to Reed, Tatara worked on and eventually led the marketing departments at anime distributor Central Park Media and video game developer Game Trust.

Nancy Walsh, Executive Vice President, Reed Exhibitions, Americas

Nancy Walsh serves as executive vice president at Reed Exhibitions, Americas and is widely recognized as one of “25 Women to Know;” one of the “Top 100 Influential Leaders” in the trade show industry as ranked by industry magazine, Tradeshow Week, and has recently been named one of the “21 Most Intriguing People in Publishing” by min magazine. Internally, she has earned distinction amongst her peers by winning Reed Elsevier’s Leadership Award and the Chairman’s Award twice.  She oversees the core B2B and B2C business in the United States and Canada, continuing to report to Chet Burchett, president of Reed Exhibitions Americas.

During her tenure at Reed, Ms. Walsh has continued to deliver financial performance despite working in highly competitive industry sectors and often challenging external market conditions. She had risen up the sales ranks at Reed Exhibitions to Senior Vice President before being tapped for General Portfolio Management responsibilities.

Ms. Walsh currently manages the largest business portfolios at Reed Exhibitions, Americas that include market-leading events such as The JCK portfolio; International Vision Expo portfolio; the wildly successful launch of NYComicCon in early 2006 and The Anime Festival in 2007, Global Gaming Expo; three food service events; the PGA Merchandise and PGA Fall Expo events; National Hardware Show®; SPA and MediSpa events and Reed’s Canadian retail shows. In addition, she is responsible for driving new business via Reed’s Launch Pad, the incubator business development division, and the advertising and sponsorship sales departments.
